CS2 Major Pick'Em strategy: what 10,000 simulated Majors show

The Pick'Em is the only CS2 prediction game with no house edge, and most people still build their sticker backwards. Ten thousand simulated Swiss stages say the 3-0 slot is where the sticker gets thrown away.

The short version

Seven advance picks at roughly two-thirds each already average between four and five points. The 3-0 and 0-3 slots land about a quarter of the time. Protect the advance picks, treat the specials as lottery tickets, and take the second favourite for 3-0 when the field is tight.

The nine picks, and what each is worth

Each Swiss stage asks for nine predictions: one team to finish 3-0, one to finish 0-3, and seven teams to advance with any 3-x record. Every correct pick is one point. Five points earns the stage sticker.

The scoring does not care how hard a pick was. A 3-0 call that lands roughly a quarter of the time pays exactly the same single point as an advance pick that lands two times in three. That asymmetry is the entire strategic content of the game, and it is the thing most stickers get wrong.

Why simulate instead of guess

You cannot multiply nine gut-feel percentages together and get a meaningful answer, because the picks are not independent. If your 3-0 team wins its first two matches, it has beaten two teams who were also winning, which changes who your advance picks are drawn against in round three. Swiss seeding means every result reshapes the bracket.

The only honest approach is to play the whole tournament many times and count. That is what our Pick'Em calculator does: sixteen teams, five rounds, record-based seeding, Bo1 everywhere except elimination and advancement matches which are Bo3 — then repeat ten thousand times and tally the outcomes.

What ten thousand Majors say

With a typical ratings spread — one clear favourite, a strong top six, a long tail — the shape of the results is remarkably stable:

SeedP(3-0)P(advance)P(0-3)
Favourite~27%~81%~3%
2nd–3rd~22%~75%~5%
4th–6th~15%~65%~9%
7th–10th~9%~45%~15%
11th–16th~5%~25%~23%

Three things fall out of that table immediately.

The 3-0 pick is the trap

Even the best team in the bracket runs the table only about a quarter of the time. Three consecutive wins is hard enough; the third of them is a Bo3 against another 2-0 team, which is by definition the strongest opponent still available. The favourite does not sit near 27% because it is weak — it sits there because the format keeps feeding it the other winners.

Two consequences. First, if you are optimising for five points rather than for a perfect sticker, the 3-0 slot is close to a free square: it fails three times out of four whatever you do, so agonising over it is wasted effort. Second, when the top two or three teams are close in form, the second favourite is frequently the better pick — its 3-0 probability is barely lower, and if you care about being right where others are wrong, it is the less crowded call.

Advance picks are where the sticker lives

Seven advance picks on the top seven seeds, at probabilities running from roughly 81% down to about 60%, sum to an expected close to five correct on their own. That is the sticker, before the two special slots contribute anything.

Which is why the single most damaging habit in Pick'Em is spending an advance slot on a sentimental underdog. Dropping a 65% pick for a 25% one costs about four tenths of a point in expectation — and across a stage where the whole game is decided by whether you land four or five, a third of a point is a lot.

Build the advance picks like a portfolio and the specials like lottery tickets, not the other way round.

The 0-3 slot nobody thinks about

Picking the wooden spoon is harder than it looks, because Swiss protects weak teams from each other right up until it does not. A bottom seed that loses its first match is then matched against another 0-1 team — a winnable game. The worst team in the field still goes 0-3 only around a quarter of the time.

The practical rule: take the weakest team that is also in the hardest half of the seeding, and accept that this slot is a coin you are flipping, not a read you are making.

Building a sticker that clears five

  1. Lock the seven advance picks first, straight off the probability table. Highest seven, no sentiment.
  2. Fill 3-0 with the favourite or the second favourite, whichever is less obvious given how the field is talking.
  3. Fill 0-3 from the bottom four, weighted towards whoever opens against a top seed.
  4. Sanity-check the distribution. The calculator shows how often that exact sticker scores 0 through 9. A well-built sticker lands five or more roughly 60–65% of the time and peaks at exactly five. That is what good looks like: the format is tuned so the informed pick clears the bar more often than not, and the perfect nine stays out of reach — under 1% even with optimal picks.

Run your own numbers

Ratings decide everything here, and ratings change every month. Open the Pick'Em calculator, drag the sliders to match current form, and let it rebuild the table. Then open the Pick'Em simulator to watch a single tournament play out round by round — it is the fastest way to feel why a 3-0 run is rarer than it sounds.

And it is worth repeating what makes this different from everything else on this site: the Pick'Em costs nothing and pays in stickers. The Roll wheel the same sites run alongside it charges 6.67% of everything you put through it. If you want the comparison in full, that is this piece.

Questions people actually ask

What is a good Pick'Em score?

Five out of nine earns the sticker. A well-built sticker averages between four and five, which is why the game feels like it is always one pick away.

Should I pick the favourite to go 3-0?

Often, but it is close. The favourite runs the table about a quarter of the time and the second seed is not far behind, so when the top of the field is tight the less-picked team is a reasonable contrarian call.

How often does the top seed go 0-3?

Almost never — around 2%. The 0-3 slot is best spent on a bottom-four team drawn against strong opposition early.

Can I use real HLTV rankings?

Yes. The calculator's sliders are plain strength numbers; the gap between two of them sets the match probability. Map current rankings onto the 0.30–1.05 range and the output follows.

Is the Pick'Em gambling?

No. There is no stake and no cash prize — it costs nothing beyond a viewer pass and pays in stickers. It is the only 0% house edge prediction game in CS2.
